Accurate Characteristic Impedance.
SD-1 is precision 75 ohm digital video coaxial cable made specifically for serial digital video. Its close
tolerance construction means that its characteristic impedance is accurately maintained. Accurate characteristic impedance is
one of the fundamental factors in achieving high performance SD and HD transmission. Precision construction Tight impedance tolerance is related to the mechanical consistency of the cable. By longitudinally applying the foil and welding the seam a very precise tubular screen is formed. This gives a more precise concentric spacing between central conductor and screen then a wrapped foil or a braid would. The use of a solid core rather than a stranded also improves consistency. Foamed Dielectrics Transmission of high frequency signals is slowed down by an absorbent effect that all dielectrics have. (The dielectric is the insulation between the central conductor and the screen). To reduce this delay, (the 'propagation delay'), the dielectric in SD-1 is foamed with gas. Foaming the dielectrics dramatically improves performance. However, it requires care to ensure the dielectric is foamed absolutely consistently. We use a chemical process to do this that achieves consistency on a molecular scale. |
